A new form of protein powder has arrived that will now be your number one choice if you prefer vegetable based protein powders, or want to avoid soy, dairy, lactose, and egg. Introducing potato protein isolate. Potato protein isolate protein powder is by far superior in every aspect over other vegetable proteins such as soy, pea and rice. While soy has estrogenic properties, which are harmful to your health in so many ways and pea and rice have a low biological values, potato protein isolate contains no soy and/ or soy lecithin and has a much higher biological value than rice or pea. In fact potato protein has a higher biological value than casein, more BCAA’s than whey protein, and overall contains more essential amino acids than any other protein powder. The choice is clear, potato protein isolate is your NEW #1 Choice for a highly digestible, fast absorbing, superior nutrition, and vegetable protein.

Why Soy, Rice, hemp, and pea poor choices for vegetable proteins

Up until we introduced potato protein isolate protein powder, if you wanted to avoid dairy proteins, such as whey, milk, and casein, and poultry proteins, such as egg whites and egg white, you had to choose between soy protein isolate, rice protein concentrate, pea protein, or hemp protein. Unfortunately all of these protein sources are low quality in one way or another. Instant soy protein isolate contains soy lecithin which contains phytoestrogens. Soy oil contains phytosterols and because soy lecithin comes from soy oil it too contains phytosterols. Therefore soy protein with soy lecithin exerts estrogenic effects in the human body.

How? The plant estrogens known as phytosterols; beta-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol have all been found in soy lecithin through independent laboratory analysis. Years ago pharmaceutical companies used these phytosterols to make human sex hormones. And now big protein manufacturers use soy lecithin to instantize soy, whey, casein, milk, and egg, protein powder. The phytosterols in soy lecithin cause endocrine disruption in the body. The phytosterols are similar to the isoflavones found in soy protein (genistein and daidzein). Even more alarming is the phytosterols found in soy lecithin are structurally similar to the synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES). Therefore soy lecithin may increase estrogen and decrease testosterone in your body

AVOID SOY LECITHIN AT ALL COSTS!

Bodybuilders, athletes, fitness enthusiasts should avoid soy protein, soy oil, and soy lecithin at all costs because the isoflavones and phytosterols. Isoflavones (also called phytoestrogens or plant estrogens ) “exert estrogenic effects directly and indirectly: directly by binding with estrogen receptors and indirectly by interfering with estrogen production.” The phytoestrogens are “similar enough structurally to act like hormones and bind with estrogen receptor sites throughout the body”. Phytosterols block receptor sites needed for testosterone. The last thing a bodybuilder or any man for that matter wants to do is INCREASE estrogen and block testosterone in their body. Estrogen (if you don’t know) is a female hormone.

We had the worlds’ most popular soy lecithin tested for estrogenic phytosterols and results showed that soy lecithin does indeed contain PHYTOSTEROLS, the bodybuilders’ worst nightmare!!

insert C of A.

Rice Protein.

Generally speaking rice protein concentrate would be considered your best choice for a vegetable protein. Unfortunately the PDCAA is only 0.46, whereas potato protein isolate has a PDCAA of 1.43. Not only that but you have to be very careful when purchasing rice protein because a lot of it is imported from China.

Pea Protein

Pea protein has a low PDCAA compared to potato protein. But worse Pea Protein contains a low amount of BCAA’s. Branched Chain Amino Acid’s are very important as they are the building blocks of muscle, and play a major role in protein synthesis.

Health Benefits of Vegetarianism:

Your health can be dramatically enhanced through changes in diet, as seen with the benefits of vegetarianism. Animal rights issues is only one of the reasons why people decide to go on a vegetarian diet. People are also beginning to care more about the environment. The main reason people choose to become vegetarian, or add more plant based nutrition to their diet is the health benefits of vegetarianism. If you choose to continue eating meat, but just want to add more plant based foods to your diet, there is also advice on how to do that as well.

If you are concerned you are not going to get enough protein, potato protein powder will satisfy your protein needs while you reap the benefits of vegetarianism.

Looking for reasons to eat more plant based foods? Consider the following:

Every year, the average American swallows 200 pounds of meat, 33 pounds of cheese, and nearly 60 pounds of added fats and oils (1).

Americans eat an excessive amount of meat, especially red meat and diary products, which is their primary source of protein. They eat an average of 90-100 grams (25 oz.) of meat daily when they only need 25-50 grams (4 oz.) per day according to the Book of Health by Susan Stockton (2).

8% of all Americans die from diabetes.(3)

Risk of having a heart attack by average American: 50%(3), Risk of having a heart attack by average American vegetarian: less than 4%.(3)

Amount you reduce your risk of heart attack by eliminating meat, dairy and eggs from your diet: over 90%.(3)

Cholesterol. Eliminating any food that comes from an animal and you will eliminate all dietary cholesterol from your diet. Your heart will thank you for that(21)

33 % of all Americans die from cancer (1 in 3). (3)

Increased risk of breast cancer for women who eat meat compared to non-meat eaters: over 4 times.(3)

Increased risk of fatal prostate cancer for men who consume animal products compared to vegetarians: 3.6 times higher.(3)

Increased risk of fatal ovarian cancer for women who consume animal products, compared to vegetarians: 3 times higher.(3)

Obesity is a major contributor to many serious illnesses, and is much less common among vegetarians, compared to the general population.21,22 Vegetarians are, on average, about 10 percent leaner then omnivores.3,4,11,21-24

Cancer rates for vegetarians are 25 to 50 percent below population averages, even after controlling for smoking, body mass index, and socioeconomic status.18,19 One study found that people who include generous amounts of fruits and vegetables in their daily diets have lower rates of cancers of the lung, breast, colon, bladder, stomach, mouth, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, and cervix compared to people who avoid such foods.20

Some of the diseases commonly prevented, consistently improved and often cured by a low-fat, vegetarian diet include :Strokes , kidney stones, prostrate cancer, diabetes, peptic ulcers, hemorrhoids, obesity, salmonellosis, heart disease, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, hiatus hernias, gallstones, arthritis, trichinosis, osteoporosis, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, constipation, diverticulosis, irritable colon, gout(3)

Macular degeneration. Diets with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens, carrots, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes, can help prevent the onset of age-related macular degeneration.(21)

Arthritis. Eliminating dairy consumption has long been connected with alleviating arthritis symptoms, but a new study indicates that a combination of gluten-free and vegan diet is very promising for improving the health of those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.(21)

Healthy skin. The nuts and vitamins A and E from vegetables play a big role in healthy skin, so vegans will usually have good skin health. Many people who switch to a vegan diet will notice a remarkable reduction in blemishes as well.(21)

Body odor. Eliminating dairy and red meat from the diet significantly reduces body odor. Going vegan means smelling better.(21)

Bad breath. Vegans frequently experience a reduction in bad breath. Imagine waking up in the morning and not having morning breath(21)

Migraines. Migraine suffers who go on vegan diets frequently discover relief from their migraines. Read more about the food-migraine connection in this article..(21)

Eating meat causes almost 40 percent more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, trucks, and planes in the world combined. (14)

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), obesity in adults has increased by 60% in the last twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years. A staggering 33% of American adults are obese and obesity-related deaths have climbed to more than 300,000 a year, second only to tobacco-related deaths. (5)

Drs. Dean Ornish and Caldwell Esselstyn — two doctors with 100 percent success in preventing and reversing heart disease — have used a vegan diet to accomplish it, as chronicled most recently in Dr. Esselstyn’s Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, which documents his 100 percent success rate for unclogging people’s arteries and reversing heart disease. (15)

A study conducted from 1986 to 1992 by Dean Ornish, MD, president and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, found that overweight people who followed a low-fat, vegetarian diet lost an average of 24 pounds in the first year and kept off that weight 5 years later. They lost the weight without counting calories or carbs and without measuring portions or feeling hungry.(6)

If you switch from the standard American diet to a vegetarian diet, you can add about 13 healthy years to your life, says Michael F. Roizen, MD, author of The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You Eat.

Meat eaters also experience accelerated cognitive and sexual dysfunction at a younger age. (6)

The CDC reports that food-borne illnesses of all kinds account for 76 million illnesses a year, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths in the United States. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), foods rich in protein such as meat, poultry, fish and seafood are frequently involved in food-borne illness outbreaks. .(6)

Good nutrition generates more usable energy—energy to keep pace with the kids, tackle that home improvement project or have better sex more often, Michael F. Roizen, MD, says in The RealAge Diet. Too much fat in your bloodstream means that arteries won’t open properly and that your muscles won’t get enough oxygen. Balanced vegetarian diets are naturally free of cholesterol-laden, artery-clogging animal products that physically slow us down and keep us hitting the snooze button morning after morning (6)

Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming more fiber, which pushes waste out of the body. Meat contains no fiber. People who eat lower on the food chain tend to have fewer instances of constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticulitis (6)

The EPA estimates that nearly 95 percent of the pesticide residue in the typical American diet comes from meat, fish and dairy products. Fish, in particular, contain carcinogens (PCBs, DDT) and heavy metals (mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium) that can’t be removed through cooking or freezing. Meat and dairy products can also be laced with steroids and hormones, so be sure to read the labels on the dairy products you purchase (6)

Disease-fighting phytochemicals give fruits and vegetables their rich, varied hues. They come in two main classes: carotenoids and anthocyanins. All rich yellow and orange fruits and vegetables—carrots, oranges, sweet potatoes, mangoes, pumpkins, corn—owe their color to carotenoids. Leafy green vegetables also are rich in carotenoids but get their green color from chlorophyll. Red, blue and purple fruits and vegetables—plums, cherries, red bell peppers—contain anthocyanins. Cooking by color is a good way to ensure you’re eating a variety of naturally occurring substances that boost immunity and prevent a range of illnesses.(6)

Meat accounts for 10 percent of Americans’ food spending. Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of the 200 pounds of beef, chicken and fish each non-vegetarian eats annually would cut individual food bills by an average of $4,000 a year..(6)

20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater (7)

If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain – enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain) (8)

If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left (8)

1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes (8)

It takes 16 lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef (8)

In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs (8)

The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year (8)

The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship (8)

70% of all grain is fed to animals (8)

Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep – the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets (8)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that 70 percent of food poisoning is caused by contaminated animal flesh. (13)

Wholesome food travels quickly through the “G.I” tract, leaving little time to spoil and incite disease within the body.(16)

Meat contains the animal’s waste and it has been said that leftover blood and urine are the flavoring elements in a hamburger. (17)

Meat Eaters Risk More Back Problems – Meat eaters tend to consume more bad fats that often leads to arterial blockages which, according to Neil Barnard, M.D, can cause back problems. “Back pain appears to begin, not in the back, but in the arteries.” “The degeneration of disks, for instance, which leads to nerves being pinched, starts with the arteries leading to the back.” Neil Barnard, M.D., president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and author of Foods That Fight Pain (Harmony Books, 1998) (18)

Meat Eating Women Have More Menopause Problems – Plant food sources contain a compound called phytoestrogens that helps to balance your hormones. Thanks to a meat-free diet, vegetarian women have much fewer problems related to menopause. They sleep better, have less hot flashes, have more energy, less weight gain, fewer mood swings, and maintain a higher sex drive (18)

Studies show that the average American gets five times the amount of protein needed. It is a common medical fact that excess protein is dangerous. The prime danger of excess meat consumption is uric acid (the waste product produced in the process of digesting protein). Uric acid attacks the kidneys and breaks down the kidney cells called nephrons. This condition is called nephritis; the prime cause of it is overburdening the kidneys. More usable protein is found in one tablespoon of potato protein powder than the average serving of meat! (19)

Meats are frozen for a long period of times. Some meats (especially poultry) are frozen up to two years. Cold temperatures do not kill all species of bacteria. Worse than this, as it is shipped and stored, most frozen meat is thawed and refrozen many times. This is almost unavoidable.(19)

According to the ADA, vegetarians are at lower risk for developing:

Heart disease

Colorectal, ovarian, and breast cancers

Diabetes

Obesity

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

This is because a healthy vegetarian diet is typically low in fat and high in fiber. However, even a vegetarian diet can be high in fat if it includes excessive amounts of fatty snack foods, fried foods, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Therefore, a vegetarian diet, like any healthy diet, must be well planned in order to help prevent and treat certain diseases. (20)

So there you have it. 58 good reasons to add more plant based nutrition to your diet, and a few benefits of vegetarianism.

A food allergy is an immune defense from the body, occurring after eating certain foods that is not harmful.

There are nine major food allergies- dairy products, soy, egg whites, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, citrus fruits, shellfish and food additives.

According to food intolerance experts at YorkTest laboratories, potatoes are least likely to be linked with intolerance…

Infants suspected of having potato allergy were subjected to skin and oral challenges using potato and immunoglobulin E antibodies to potation (the most prevalent potato protein). Skin prick tests on these sensitive infants shoed an allergy incidence of less then 5% for potato versus 15% AND 9% for eggs and cows milk respectively. Positive challenge responses to raw and cooked potato were observed in food allergic atopic infants (47).

According to food intolerance experts at YorkTest laboratories, potatoes are least likely to be linked with intolerance. Of more then 8,000 patients who took a food intolerance test with YorkTest in 2007, less than 1% tested positive for potatoes. Thus, potato protein seems to represent a low allergy risk among the general population.

What are the goals that you want to achieve pre-workout?

The most important thing to remember is to consume foods that provide glucose, prevent dehyration, delay fatigue and minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Gastrointestinal discomfort is experiences by 70% of athletes. The frequency is almost twice as high during running as swimming other endurance sports, such as cycling. This may cause many exercisers to refrain from protein intake during exercise.

Some proteins are more easily digested then others. this means that the rate of gastric degradation and emptying may be more critical than previously though if protein plays a direct ergogenic and mental supporting role during exercise (39).

Vegetarian Protein

Potato protein powder and whey protein isolate behave very similar rendering little cursing and viscosity increase during simulated gastric acidification as well as after degradation is initiated by the stomach protease pepsin.

Potato protein powder indicate that the protein is soluble at stomach pH and likely to be susceptible to degradation within the gastric compartment by the pepsin, which has the effect on reducing viscosity thereby inducting a dash breakdown into peptides.

Clearly a rapidly digested protein exerts less discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract.

SIMPHYD studies have demonstrated that potato protein powder is high soluble at low pH and digested rapidly by human proteases suggesting fast postprandial effects.

Amino Acids and Their Roles

Essential amino acids are “essential” because the body does not synthesize them. In performance nutrition an excellent amino acid composition becomes even more important as the idea is not to consume excess amounts of protein but adequate amounts of protein for sparing kidneys extra work.
So what types of amino acids does potato protein powder contain?

Branched Chain Amino Acids

BCAAs are important for several reasons being the main components of muscle proteins, assisting with proving energy and playing a role in fatigue and mental performance. Leucine, a type of BCAA, stimulates protein synthesis in muscle and is closely associated with the release of glucose generating precursors such as alanine, from muscle.

Consumption of BCAA (especially leucine) before or during endurance exercise may prevent or decrease the net rate of protein degradation.

Additionally it may improve both mental and physical performance and limit muscle glycogen degradation and depletion of muscle glycogen stores (26).

Cysteine

Under certain conditions, the dietary supplementation of Cysteine is recommended as it plays a key role in the synthesis of GSH- a molecule that plays a principle role in the body’s main first line of defense. Intense training can give rise to significant free radical production, resulting in impaired immunity and oxidative stress in the body.

Glycine

Potato Protein Powder contains a high amount of glycine; this is a glycogenic amino acid that helps the body with the necessary glucose for energy and regulate blood sugar levels. While not essential, this amino acid is involved in phospho-creatine, glutathione and haemoglobin synthesis.

Dietary supplementation with glycine and cysteine has been seen to restore GSH synthesis and reduce oxidative stress and oxidant damage in people with excessively high blood glucose, such as diabetics (21).

Arginine

In addition to its anabolic effect in creatine synthesis it is involved in the excretion of urea and the protein of No, which is important to blood vessel function and blood circulation. Studies have found that oral arginine supplementation reduces cardiovascular disease factors in type 2 diabetics both at rest and when combined with training and diet (32, 33)

Arginine is thought to increase the production of NO in individuals with decreased basal NO production (34). Additional theories suggest that dietary L-arginine supplementation may increase muscle gain and reduce fat deposits and blood triglyceride levels (TGA). The findings may also have a positive impact not he development of exercise related programs for pre-diabetics and card risk subjects where a high TGA and adipose tissue are significant risk factors (36).

Based on potato, an excellent source of nutrition protein containing 95% protein in dry weight.

Potato Protein Powder is a rapidly digested protein and may be useful for muscle anabolism prgrammes in relation to exercise.

Woolfe suggest that digestibility is 83%-90% in vivo in rats 23, whereas the true digestibility of heat coagulated potato protein has been found to be close to 100% (97.3%). Native Proteins have the same or higher digestibility.

Isolated potato proteins have a true digestibility of more than 98% ensuring optimal utilization and a need for smaller amounts. Potato protein isolate shows the highest PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score) and protein efficiency ratio among vegetable proteins.

Studies have shown that proteins or amino acids ingested one hour before and after exercise are more effective than carbohydrates when it comes to up-regulating muscle protein synthesis and securing subsequent improvements in muscle performance (9). Other studies have also demonstrated that oral intake of BCAA combined with arginine effectively suppress exercise muscle degradation during moderate exercise (12).

The critical factor in what is called central fatigue is actually related to amino acid homeostasis. The central nerve system can be caused by an exercise- evoked reduction in blood BCAA. Research has established a link between blood BCAA and mental performance during exercise. Increased consumption of BCAA awhile exercising may cause an imbalance between BCAA and tryptophan. Increased free blood tryptophan may then enter the brain, increasing the release of serotonin. The net effect is the drossy, tired feeling that athletes fear- central fatigue (13).

A recent study confirmed that BCAA supplementation increases resistance to fatigue and enhances lipid oxidation during exercise in glycogen- depleted subjects.

Can Potato Protein Support the Immune System?

Science has discovered that cytokines and other peptides are produced, expressed ad released by miscall fibbers and exert hormonal effects. Some experts have named them Myokines.
Many athletes favor the use of an antioxidant repair dose of nutrients after exercise. Amino acids consumed right after exercise may also be important in relation to endogenous antioxidant formation.

The most dominant endogenous antioxidant is GSH (Glutathione) containing trio peptide, which acts as a major antioxidant in the body. GSH participates directly the the neutralization of free radicals and reactive oxygen compounds- immune-depressing factors inducted by exercise stress. GSH assists further with maintain exogenous antioxidants such as vitamin C and E in their active forms 19, 20.

Avoiding the “critical Zone” when exercising requires a constant supply of glucose and a large pool of ATP, providing muscles with easily accessible fuel.

ATP can be reared via muscle creatine in the form of creatine phosphate (CP). Creatine is produced by the muscles through conversion of the amino acid arginine which means a god arginine supply is also a critical factor. The reaction between ATP and creatine phosphate is called the ATP-PC system. These reactions by the ATP-PC system occur very rapidly and are burnt out in 10 seconds. This is optimal for sports requiring short bursts of energy
